Day 12: Where wildlife, waterfalls, and authentic countryside life come together.
Today, we leave the more familiar tourist routes behind and venture into a rural corner of Costa Rica
This is a region with enormous natural beauty and growing tourism potential — a place that is still relatively undiscovered and deserves to be explored. Here, the experience goes beyond simply observing nature; it is an opportunity to connect with the landscapes, traditions, and rhythms of rural Costa Rica.
We’ll arrive around lunchtime and settle into the area before spending the afternoon exploring the surrounding landscape on foot. As we walk through the countryside, we’ll have the opportunity to appreciate the lush vegetation, discover the beauty of the region, and experience a side of Costa Rica that many visitors never get to see.
As darkness falls, the experience takes on a completely different character. We’ll head out for a night walk, discovering the nocturnal species that emerge after sunset. Frogs, insects, reptiles, and other creatures become active under the cover of darkness, offering us a fascinating glimpse into the hidden life of the rainforest.

Where the Wild Meets Tradition
Day 13: immersion into the rural heart of Costa Rica
Today, we continueexploring the biodiversity, landscapes, and traditions that make Mastatal such a special destination.
Morning Birdwatching
We’ll begin early, when the forest is most active. Located between the Pacific Coast and the Central Valley, Mastatal is home to remarkably diverse ecosystems and more than 358 bird species, including migratory birds from North and South America. Surrounded by flowering plants, fruit trees, and the forests of La Cangreja National Park, we’ll explore this rich habitat with the help of a local guide and telescope.
Juco Waterfall Hike
Next, we’ll set out on an intermediate hike through the lush countryside to Juco Waterfall, the largest waterfall in Mastatal, with an impressive 30-meter (98-foot) drop. After the hike, we’ll have time to enjoy the refreshing waters and the beautiful natural surroundings before returning to the community.
Chocolate Experience
We’ll finish the day with a hands-on journey into the world of cacao at a family-run farm-to-bar chocolate experience. As third-generation cacao farmers and first-generation chocolate makers, the family will introduce us to the entire process — from growing and harvesting cacao to transforming it into fine chocolate.
The experience includes a walk through the agroforestry farm, tasting fresh cacao and beans at different stages, making rustic bonbons with ingredients grown on the farm, trying our hand at chocolate tempering, and preparing traditional Mayan-style hot chocolate accompanied by freshly baked treats.
A day that brings together wildlife, adventure, local knowledge, and the living traditions of rural Costa Rica.

With our hosts, Marco and Jenny, we’ll experience the morning milking of their cows — a simple but deeply rooted tradition that has long been part of everyday life on Costa Rican farms.
After breakfast, we’ll visit one of the few remaining traditional trapiches in Costa Rica. Here, we’ll discover the fascinating process of transforming sugarcane into traditional products and learn about the important role these small mills once played in the country’s rural economy. Once a familiar sight on family farms, today they offer a glimpse into a way of life that is slowly becoming part of Costa Rica’s history.
After lunch, we’ll make our way back to San José, following a scenic route through the hills of Puriscal, with beautiful views along the way.
A final day to slow down, connect with local traditions, and say goodbye to this beautiful land we’ve spent the past days discovering.
