What currency should I bring?
The Costa Rican colón (CRC) is the local currency. U.S. dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. Bring small bills ($1, $5, $10, and $20) for tips and small purchases. If exchanging money, compare rates and fees; airport exchange counters are convenient but may not offer the best rate. Credit cards are widely accepted.
Will I have access to mobile data and Wi-Fi?
Check whether your mobile plan includes international roaming. Local SIM cards may be available at authorized retailers at or near the airport, and eSIMs are another option if your phone supports them. Your phone must be unlocked to use a physical SIM from another provider. Wi-Fi is common at hotels, although coverage can be limited in remote areas.
What travel documents should I bring?
Bring your valid passport, flight details, accommodation information, and any documents required for entry based on your nationality and itinerary. Some travelers may need proof of onward travel. We also recommend keeping digital and printed copies of important documents.
Should I bring my regular medications?
Yes. Bring enough prescription medication for your entire stay, plus a little extra for unexpected delays. Keep it in its original packaging and in your carry-on luggage. Check any special requirements for controlled medications or temperature-sensitive prescriptions before traveling.
What electrical outlets are used in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica uses Type A and Type B outlets, the same types commonly found in the United States and Canada. The standard supply is 120V, 60Hz. U.S. and Canadian travelers generally won't need an adapter; other travelers should check their plugs and device voltage.

What clothing should I pack?
Lightweight, breathable, quick-drying clothing is ideal. Pack comfortable hiking clothes, a swimsuit, a hat, sunglasses, and a lightweight rain jacket or poncho. Bring a light layer for cooler mountain destinations and air-conditioned spaces.
What type of footwear should I bring?
Comfortable closed-toe shoes with good traction are best for most hiking trails, hanging bridges, nature walks, and many outdoor excursions. Lightweight hiking or trail shoes are excellent choices. Ankle-supporting boots may be useful for more demanding terrain, while water shoes may be appropriate for certain water activities.
Should I bring sunscreen and insect repellent?
Absolutely! Bring broad-spectrum sunscreen, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, and a hat. These essentials are especially useful during outdoor activities in tropical and sunny environments.
